The basics
What is StudyBuddies?
A learning app for children in pre-K through 4th grade. It combines learning games, flash cards, quizzes, story writing, and an AI buddy that explains schoolwork. Parents can view recorded progress in the website dashboard.
Who is it for?
Children in pre-K through 4th grade, roughly ages 4 to 10. Choose your child’s grade to set the starting skills and difficulty.
Speaker controls read page instructions aloud. Games also offer spoken guidance and demonstrations to help children follow what to do.
Where can I use it?
Right here in a web browser, on a computer, a phone or a tablet. The StudyBuddies app for phones and tablets is coming to the App Store and Google Play.
On a computer it shows the iPad version of the app, sized to fit your window. On a phone, turn it sideways for the games.
Open StudyBuddiesCan we try it before making an account?
Yes. Tap "Try a game" and your child can play five games, three tries each, with no account. They pick a buddy and their age first, so each game plays at the right level.
When the tries are used up, a parent creates an account. The buddy, the stars and the progress carry into it.
A free account includes the first 3 worlds, 10 activities a day, and 100 buddy messages a week. A first eligible paid plan offers either 7 free days on Weekly or a half-price first month on Monthly.
Try a gameWhat is on the home page?
Your child's buddy, with one thing to do today. Tap Play to start it, or Something else to see every activity. Tap the buddy to talk to it.
Where is Practice?
Inside Activities. Open Activities and tap Practice for Flash Cards, Brain Buzz and Write a Story.
Buddies and games
Who are the buddies?
12 characters drawn for StudyBuddies, each one based on a real pet. Each has its own way of helping: Baloo takes small steps, Mowgli explores, Gracie is careful with words.
Meet the buddiesHow do we get more buddies?
Your child starts with 3 buddies. Learning activities earn XP, and new buddies become available as your child progresses through the levels.
Can my child change buddy?
Yes, at any time, from the You page. Nothing is lost by switching.
Does the buddy just give the answer?
With hints turned on, the AI buddy starts by asking what your child has tried. It explains the idea, shows a similar example, then helps your child work through their question with a step left for them to finish.
If your child directly asks for the answer twice, or says they are out of time, the buddy gives the answer and explains the steps.
See how a hint worksWhat happens when my child gets one wrong?
After two wrong answers in a game, your child is offered a hint and can try again. Wrong answers do not remove earned rewards. There is no leaderboard ranking children against each other.
How many activities are there?
Over 450 activities across nine themed areas, covering skills such as counting, spelling, reading, and problem solving. Three areas are open at the start; the rest unlock as your child earns levels.
See the activitiesWhat are coins?
Coins are earned by playing: every game and practice activity pays some. They are spent in the shop on a hat or a pair of shades for your buddy.
Coins are the shop's only money. They have no value outside StudyBuddies.
Can coins be bought?
Not yet. The shop will sell coin packs: 500 coins for $1.99, 1,200 for $3.50 and 2,500 for $5.99. Buying one will need the parent PIN, so a child cannot buy one alone. Until then, playing is the way to earn coins.
Accounts and plans
What can I see in the parent dashboard?
Sign in with the same account used in the app. Choose a child to view their recorded study time, completed activities, level, and subject practice. You can also review recurring mistakes and see the subject suggested for each day of the weekly plan.
A subject with no recorded practice is shown as not practiced yet. Chat history remains on the device where the conversation happened and is not included in cloud progress.
Open parent dashboardHow many children can use one account?
Every account includes three learner profiles. Each child has their own grade, buddy, and saved progress.
Extra profiles are billed monthly on top of your weekly, monthly, or yearly main plan. The first adds $2.49/month, the second adds $2.99/month, and each next profile adds $0.50 more than the previous one. These charges stack: two extra profiles cost $5.48/month; three cost $8.97/month.
You can add or cancel paid slots in the website parent dashboard. Removing a child’s profile does not cancel its billing. Paid slots last through the period paid for, and cancelling keeps the child’s saved progress.
Checkout currently runs in Stripe test mode. Test cards simulate payment; no real money is charged.
See profile pricesHow do I make an account?
A parent makes it. You give an email and a password, confirm a phone number, and then set up your child: their name, their school year and their first buddy.
For a child under 13, we ask for the parent's name and email as a record of your permission.
Create an accountHow much does it cost?
A free account includes the first 3 worlds (Number Mountain, Shape & Time Town and Letter Lane), up to 10 games or practice activities a day, and 100 buddy messages a week, counting the buddy's replies. Games remain subject to the levels needed to unlock them.
Paid plans include every world, unlimited activities, and up to 1,500 AI buddy questions per week: $5.99 weekly, $14.99 monthly, or $79.99 yearly. The first eligible Weekly plan includes 7 free days; the first eligible Monthly plan costs $7.50 for its first month.
See plansCan I pay for a plan yet?
Checkout is currently enabled in Stripe test mode. It accepts test cards, and no real money is charged. Real payments will be announced when available.
Can we have the free week and the half-off month?
No, one or the other, once. The free week and the half-off first month are one first-time offer. Only the first plan ever taken on an account gets it, and only on a device and internet connection that have not had it before. Taking either one uses up both.
Will I be reminded before I am charged?
Yes. About 3 days before a free week ends or a plan renews, we send a reminder: a notification on the phone, if you allow notifications, and a line on Your plan in Settings. That gives you time to cancel if you want to.
How do I cancel, and can I get a refund?
Cancel any time from Your plan in Settings, or from the app store you paid through. Cancelling stops the next charge. The time you already paid for stays yours until it runs out. Deleting the app does not cancel a plan.
Time already paid for is not refunded, except in special circumstances, such as a charge after you cancelled. Cancel during the free week and nothing is charged.
Read the subscription termsDoes progress follow us to another device?
Yes. Sign in on the other device and your child's level, buddies and rewards are there.
How do I delete the account?
Open Settings from the buddy's menu and choose Delete account. You can also clear only the chat history from the same page. If you have set a parent PIN, Settings asks for it first.
If you have a plan, cancel it first (Settings, Your plan). A plan bought on our website has to be cancelled before the account can be deleted; one bought through the App Store or Google Play is cancelled there, as deleting the account does not stop it renewing.
Deleting the account deletes the sign-in and the progress kept with it. Records of payments are kept as the law requires.
How do I report a bug?
Open Settings and tap "Found a bug? Tap here to report it." Say what happened and press Send. Your mail app opens with the report addressed to us, and nothing goes until you press Send there.
The report adds a few lines to help us find the problem: where in the app you were, the kind of device, the app version, the account number, and your child's first name and school year.
Safety and privacy
Is the chat safe for children?
Every message is checked before the buddy sees it. A message that is not suitable is not sent on, and your child is told which words were the problem.
Checkers get things wrong, especially with history and science homework. So any flag can be challenged, and one that was a mistake stops counting right away.
What is the parent PIN?
Four digits chosen by a parent. On this device, the PIN guards Settings, the website parent dashboard, coin purchases, and links out of the app. The account password is still needed to sign in on another device.
The digits are hidden as they are typed, the keypad is in a different order every time, and five wrong tries lock it for 15 minutes. It is separate from your account password.
How do I set the PIN?
In Settings, under Parent lock. You can change it or turn it off there too, after typing the PIN. If no PIN is set when you go to buy a coin pack, the app asks you to choose one first.
What if I forget the PIN?
A forgotten PIN is reset from a link emailed to the parent on the account, never inside the kids' app, so a child cannot clear it. Sending that email is still being built. Until it is, write to us and we will help.
Get in touchCan my child change the settings?
Not once you set a parent PIN. Settings is where the school year, the chat history, the plan and the account are managed, and the PIN is asked every time it is opened.
What happens to the stories my child writes?
They stay on the device they were written on. They are never uploaded.
Can the movement and music be turned off?
Yes. Settings has switches for music, for movement and for background movement. If the device itself is set to reduce motion, StudyBuddies follows that too.
No question matches that. Ask us.
