These subscription terms are part of the terms of use. Words that are defined there mean the same thing here.
The short version
- A free account gets the first 3 worlds, 10 activities a day, and 100 messages with the buddy a week. A paid plan includes every world, unlimited activities and up to 1,500 buddy questions a week.
- Three plans: $5.99 a week, $14.99 a month, or $79.99 for 12 months.
- Every plan renews on its own until you cancel. Cancelling stops the next charge; what you paid for runs to its end.
- One first-time offer, once: the weekly plan’s first week free, or the monthly plan’s first month half off.
- We remind you about 3 days before a free week ends or a plan renews.
- No refunds for time already paid for, except in special circumstances looked at one by one.
Checkout is in test mode. Test cards only; no real money is charged. These terms describe the paid service when real payments are enabled.
1. What is free, and what a plan includes
A free account gets the first 3 worlds (Number Mountain, Shape & Time Town and Letter Lane) and every practice activity, up to 10 activities a day. A game round, a card sitting, a quiz and a piece of writing each count as one. The count starts again each day at midnight on the device. A free account also includes up to 100 messages with the buddy a week, counting the buddy’s replies as well as the child’s messages; the week runs from Monday to Sunday.
Every plan includes every world, as many activities as you like, every day, and chatting with the buddy. Fair use: a plan includes up to 1,500 chats a week, counted from Monday to Sunday. A chat is one message sent to the buddy. Very few families will ever come near this ceiling; if you do, the chat is back on Monday and everything else stays open. We may change the ceiling with notice under section 8.
A plan is for one account and the learners on it, on the devices that account is signed in to. It is not for resale or for sharing outside your household.
2. The plans
- Weekly: $5.99 every week.
- Monthly: $14.99 every month, with the first month half off (section 3).
- Yearly: $79.99 every 12 months.
Prices are in US dollars. Tax may be added where the law requires it, by the app store that takes the payment (section 7).
Extra learner profiles
Each account includes 3 learner profiles. Extra profiles are a separate monthly subscription on top of the main weekly, monthly, or yearly plan. The first costs $2.49 per month, the second adds $2.99, the third adds $3.49, and each next profile adds $0.50 more than the previous one. Two extra profiles therefore cost $5.48 per month in total; three cost $8.97. First-time offers on a main plan do not discount this add-on.
You review and confirm the total and any prorated charge before adding a paid profile. Manage or cancel the add-on from the website parent dashboard. Cancelling the main plan and cancelling the profile add-on are separate actions. Cancel the add-on to stop its next monthly charge. Paid slots remain available until the paid period ends. After that, only the included slots can be used in the app, while saved progress remains available to view in the dashboard. Removing a profile from the app deletes its progress but does not automatically cancel the paid slot.
3. The free week and the half-off month
The free week. When an account’s first plan is the weekly plan, the first 7 days cost $0.00. Unless you cancel before the free week ends, the weekly plan begins the day it ends and $5.99 is charged every week from then on. Cancel during the free week and nothing is charged.
The half-off month. When an account’s first plan is the monthly plan, the first month costs $7.50. From the second month it is $14.99 every month, until you cancel.
The free week and the half-off month are one offer, given once. Only the first plan ever taken on an account gets it, and only on a device and internet connection that have not had it before. Taking either one uses up both: an account that had the free week does not get the half-off month later, and the other way round. Any plan taken out after that is charged at its full price from the first day. Making a new account to get the offer again is not allowed.
To keep to this, the app remembers on the device that an offer has been taken there.
4. Renewal
Every plan renews on its own at the end of each period - a week, a month, or 12 months - and the price for the next period is charged at that time, until you cancel. You will be told the price and the renewal date before you buy, and the app shows the next charge on the Your plan page in Settings.
A reminder before you are charged. About 3 days before a free week ends, and about 3 days before a plan renews, we remind you: a notification on the phone, if you have allowed notifications, and a line on the Your plan page in Settings. The reminder is a courtesy; a plan still renews if it is missed.
If a renewal payment fails, the plan may be paused until it can be taken; the app store will tell you. A plan that has not been paid for does not run.
5. Cancelling
You can cancel at any time. Cancelling stops the next charge; it does not end the current one. Whatever was paid for runs to the end of its period, and you keep using StudyBuddies until then. A weekly plan cancelled on its third day still gives you the rest of that week; a yearly plan cancelled in its second month still gives you the rest of its 12 months.
How to cancel: from the Your plan page in Settings, or through the app store you bought the plan from (the App Store subscriptions page on an Apple device, or the Google Play subscriptions page on Android). Deleting the app does not cancel a plan.
6. Refunds
A period that has been paid for is not refunded, in whole or in part, whether or not the app was used. A week bought is a week had.
The exception is special circumstances, looked at one at a time: for instance a charge made after a cancellation, a plan that could not be used because of a fault on our side, or a purchase made without the account holder’s permission. Write to us at studybuddies.support1@gmail.com and we will look into it. Where a plan was bought through an app store, the store’s own refund rules also apply and a refund may have to be asked for there.
The same goes for a coin pack: once its coins are added to the account it is not refunded, except in special circumstances or where the app store’s own rules give a refund.
Nothing here takes away a right to a refund that the law where you live gives you and that cannot be given up.
7. Billing, and the app stores
Payment for a plan is taken by the app store the app came from - Apple’s App Store or Google Play - using the payment method on your store account. The store is the merchant of record for that purchase, and its terms apply to the payment alongside these. We do not see or keep your card number.
The plan is tied to the app store account it was bought with. To keep a plan on a new phone, sign in to the same app store account and restore your purchases from the Your plan page.
8. Changes to prices and plans
We may change a plan’s price, or add, change or withdraw a plan or an offer. If a price you are paying is going to change, we will tell you in the app and by email at least 30 days before it does, and the new price applies from the first renewal after that. If you do not want to pay the new price, cancel before that renewal and the plan runs to the end of the period already paid for. A plan that is withdrawn runs to the end of its current period and then stops, and nothing more is charged.
9. If an account is closed
If you delete the account, cancel the plan first; deleting the account does not by itself stop a renewal at the app store. If we close an account for breaking the rules in the terms of use, the plan ends with it and time already paid for is not refunded, except as section 6 says.
